The UN Association of Finland has adopted a strategy for 2006 - 2010.

The Association aims at being

• A reliable and visible UN expert: the association develops its UN expertise and offers it actively to the media, NGO's and other actors
• An actor that provides links and support: the association supports building new partnerships and helps different actors in finding the UN links in their activities. By providing information and cooperating, the association supports local UN associations, member organisations and other actors in their work in promoting the UN principles and goals.
• A purposeful actor with influence: the association conveys views and opinions to decision-makers; views of its own, its member organisations and other representatives of the civil society, both in Finland and abroad.
• An effective actor: the association defines the focal points and target groups of its actions effectively, hence avoiding overlap with other actors in the same field

In the statutes of the association (2§) it says as follows: "the purpose of the association is as a national organisation to promote the principles and goals of the United Nations and support its actions, hence promoting international understanding and peaceful cooperation between nations. In order to fulfill its purpose, the Finnish UN association organises meetings, seminars, courses and presentations, provides information and publications and supports the founding of local UN associations and activity groups that share its ideals and purposes".

Strengthening possibilities for participation for Finnish citizens is a core issue in the activities of the UN Association of Finland. We can divide our work under three topics, all closely related to the core issue of strengthening possibilities for participation.

The Association:

Educates about global responsibility and possibilities of influence

• By producing and developing materials, tools and working models
• By organising events and campaigns in the field of development education, both independently and in cooperation with other organisations

Provides information about the UN and its actions

• By producing informative materials and publications
• By organising seminars and other events
• By ensuring that the view points of the UN remain visible in the media

Influences Finnish UN policies

• By raising discussions on UN-related questions and activating other parties for campaign work
• By providing member organisations a channel for influencing UN policies in Finland and internationally
• By strengthening the mechanisms for civil society participation in the UN
